Falk-Tomlinson-Sillings House
2531 Glenwood Court
New Albany, IN 47150
$1

Listing Description:
This National Register eligible, upper-middle class residential area was developed by the Glenwood Realty Company in the short period of time between the mid-1930s and World War II. Prior to its development, the tract of land was home to the athletic field and amphitheater of the historic Glenwood Park. Most area teams played at the athletic field that was leased to the Glenwood Park Association. New Albany High School used the field for its football games and the Calumet Club also made use of the field for its sporting events.

In 1902 twenty-five acres, which is currently the residential area of Glenwood Park and Glenwood Court, was acquired by the Louisville and Southern Indiana Traction Company. The Company ran the interurban rail line that connected New Albany, Jeffersonville and Louisville. As a marketing tool to help increase passenger traffic the entrepreneurs of the line wanted to create a destination spot. The historic park was opened in 1903, and was used for picnics, summer opera, entertainment, recreation, political speeches and a Chautauqua event. Thie image above shows the park during the 1908 Chautuaqua. Besides the athletic field and amphitheater, the park included rustic bridges, children’s amusements, a roller-skating rink and boat rentals. In its early years it was by far the most popular park in the Falls Cities area, but its popularity waned with the decline of travel by streetcar, and the site was sold for development in 1935. The 1937 flood destroyed the remainder of the park’s amenities.

The home at 2531 Glenwood Court was constructed circa 1938 in an English cottage-inspired style. The first owners were William and Mae Falk. Mr. Falk was a credit manager for the Indiana Veneer & Panel Company. By the publication of the 1943 New Albany City Directory, Robert Tomlinson – an auditor with the Breece Veneer & Panel Company – and his wife Martha were living here.

The Tomlinsons continued to reside here through the late 1940s, when George and Meta Sillings purchased the home. Mr. Sillings was the vice president of the New Albany Steam Laundry. The Sillings remained here for the next three decades, with Mrs. Sillings passing away in 1976 and her husband passing three years later.
