Peters-Brown-Habermel House
1609 Shelby Place
New Albany, IN 47150
Sheriff Sale

Listing Description:
This 1909 bungalow is located in a National Register-listed historic district across from historic New Albany High School and just minutes from downtown New Albany.  This quiet neighborhood was developed between 1906 and 1920 on the site of the former Day Lumber Company lumberyard, and prominent local contractors S. Day & Sons built many of the homes here.

The Shelby Place Historic District features a mix of early 20th-century architectural styles and an esplanade in the center of the two-block street. The postcard below, from New Albany's Centennial series, shows the neighborhood in 1913, including the Tudor Revival-style Brent Apartments that stood next to this house before being destroyed by fire.

The home at 1609 Shelby Place was first occupied by the family of Clarence W. Peters, who was a foreman at the I. F. Force Handle Co. in New Albany.  The Charles Brown family had located here by 1925 and remained in the house for 10 years.  In the early 1940s, the William Habermel family located here, while in later years and through the 1960s, the Robert. D. Habermel family made their home at 1609 Shelby Place.

The property’s judgment number is 22CO1-1505-MF-0000732.  With this number you can visit the Clerk’s Office in the City-County building and enter it into their computers to find the judgment owed on the property. This is public record.
