Sheriff Sale

Listing Description:

Built c.1937. Jacobethan Revival.

This upscale residential area – eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places – was developed beginning in the mid-1930s on the former site of the most popular park in the New Albany area.  Glenwood Park was opened in 1903 and was used for picnics, summer opera, entertainment, recreation, political speeches, and an annual Chautauqua event.  The park was owned and operated by the Louisville and Southern Indiana Traction Company, which provided interurban service to the park from Louisville and Jeffersonville.

According to a contemporary advertisement, the park included among its attractions “boating, bathing, fishing, base ball, foot ball, bowling, box ball, shoot the chutes, tennis, merry go round, miniature railway, open air theater, naptha launches, shooting gallery, refreshments, dancing, quoits, croquet, and edesonia.”  The postcard above, from about 1908, shows the entrance to the skating rink.  The area which is now Glenwood Court was home to an athletic field that was leased to the Glenwood Park Association.  Most area teams played at the athletic field, as it was the only one in the area.  New Albany High School used the field for its football games until the development of Buerk Field, and the Calumet Club also made use of the field for its sporting events. The park was sold for residential development in 1935, with the first homes already in place and inundated by the devastating flood of 1937.

The property’s judgment number is 22C01-1501-MF-000003.  With this number you can visit the Clerk’s Office in the City-County building and enter it into their computers to find the judgment owed on the property. This is public record.
