Built c. 1895. Shotgun. The Adolph Day House. Adolph
‘Dolph’ Day purchased this lot from William C.
Utz in April 1894, for $750, and local contracting firm Stephen Day and Son built this house soon after.
Dolph was the eldest son of Stephen Day, and was a managing partner in the family business made up of his father and brothers, Herman, Will, and Clem.
Dolph lived here after his marriage to Josephine
Ziegelbauer in May 1896, and remained here at least through 1902. Three of the family’s eight children were born here, before they moved across the street to a new home at 1608 Ekin. The Days retained ownership of this house, however, using it as a rental property.
According to City Directories, Charles and Minnie Rogers lived here from 1903-1906. The 1907-08
Directory lists Arthur A. Day, a mechanic, in residence. Arthur was the second youngest of Stephen Day’s sons, and likely lived here following his 1906 marriage to Anna Weber. Arthur did not join the family construction business, and eventually settled in Indianapolis. It is not known how long the house remained in the Day family as rental property.
The property’s judgment number is 22C01-1409-MF-001361. With this number you can visit the Clerk’s Office in the City-County building and enter it into their computers to find the judgment owed on the property. This is public record.
