Rutherford-Huff House
1119 East Spring Street
New Albany, IN 47150
Sheriff Sale

Listing Description:

The Rutherford-Huff house is located in the heart of the East Spring Street Historic District, just moments from downtown New Albany. The Queen Anne style home was constructed in 1905 for the family of Dr. Robert Rutherford. In 1921 the owners of the Huff Furniture Company in downtown New Albany purchased the home, and it remained in the Huff family through 1961.

(The description below may not reflect current conditions)

The two-story home features a large, wrap-around front porch with fluted concrete columns. It retains its original wood siding and some of its original windows (storm windows have been added). Replacement windows have retained the original window sizes and sash configuration.

The Rutherford-Huff house has over 3500 square feet of living space and includes four or five bedrooms and three baths.

The double front doors open into a formal entry hall with an open staircase, parquet floor and a built-in bench.

A stained glass window that once illuminated the staircase has been recently removed, but photographs would allow it to be recreated. French doors open into a parlor and a dining room, both with parquet floors and original Victorian woodwork.

The dining room has a bay window and pocket doors. A library off the dining room also has parquet floors, as well as built-in bookshelves. A very large, updated kitchen with strip-oak flooring, extensive cabinetry, and a breakfast bar runs across the rear of the house, and includes a back staircase to the second story.

Eleven-foot ceilings, original woodwork and working cast-iron radiators remain throughout the house.

Upstairs, the bedrooms have strip oak flooring that is currently covered with carpet. Each of the bedrooms has at least one closet, added with an attention to detail that maintains the historic character of the rooms. Original windows remain throughout the second story, as do the six-panel ‘cross and Bible’ doors. Two modern bathrooms are also included on the second floor.

The fenced lot features mature trees and a shed, as well as five off-street parking spaces. East Spring Street has an active neighborhood association (www.eastspringstreet.org).

The Rutherford-Huff House is included within the bounds of the locally-designated East Spring Street Historic District; therefore, any exterior alterations must be reviewed and approved by the city's Historic Preservation Commission. For more information about the Commission and a copy of the design guidelines for the historic district, visit www.newalbanypreservation.com.

The property’s judgment number is 22CO1-0911-MF-02432 . With this number you can visit the Clerk's Office in the City-County building and enter it into their computers to find the judgment owed on the property. This is public record.
