Rutherford-Huff House
1119 East Spring Street
New Albany, IN 47150
$249,900

Listing Description:

The Rutherford-Huff house is located in the heart of the East Spring Street Historic District, just moments from downtown New Albany. The Queen Anne style home was constructed in 1905 for the family of Dr. Robert Rutherford. In 1921 the owners of the Huff Furniture Company in downtown New Albany purchased the home, and it remained in the Huff family through 1961.  This magnificent home has been extremely well-maintained.

The two-story home features a large, wrap-around front porch with fluted concrete columns. It retains its original wood siding and some of its original windows, with storm windows added. Replacement windows have retained the original window sizes and sash configuration. Some of the updates to the house include two central air conditioners (one new in 2006 and the other regularly maintained), a three year old roof and an ADT security system.

The Rutherford-Huff house has approximately 3400 square feet of living space and includes four bedrooms and three baths. The double front doors open into a formal entry hall with an open staircase, parquet floor and a built-in bench.

The first floor includes four large hand-painted ceiling medallions - reportedly from Italy - with ornate brass chandeliers.

A unique stained glass window brightens the landing and is visible from the entry hall.

French doors open into a parlor and a dining room, both with parquet floors and original Victorian woodwork. The dining room has a bay window and pocket doors.

A library off the dining room also has parquet floors, as well as built-in bookshelves. A large (27' x 19') updated kitchen with three ceiling fans, strip-oak flooring, extensive cabinetry, and a breakfast bar runs across the rear of the house.

This room also includes access to a back staircase to the second story.  A bright and sunny breakfast room offers five windows, a ceiling fan, and built-in shelves for displaying your favorite pieces.

Eleven-foot ceilings, original woodwork and working, ornate cast-iron radiators remain throughout the house. Upstairs, the bedrooms have strip oak flooring that is currently covered with carpet.

Each of the four bedrooms has at least one closet, added with an attention to detail that maintains the historic character of the rooms. Original windows remain throughout the second story, as do the six-panel ‘cross and Bible’ doors. Two modern bathrooms are also included on the second floor. A fifth room on this level would make an ideal office or den.

The fenced lot features mature trees and a shed, as well as five off-street parking spaces.  The fenced lot features mature trees and a shed, as well as five off-street parking spaces.
